6 Quick & Easy Tips to Reducing Allergens in Your Home

Ensuring your home is free from allergens is essential to keeping your family safe. Don’t worry; getting rid of allergens is not too hard. There are simple and inexpensive ways you can do to say goodbye to coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose!

1. Ventilate Rooms with Air Purifiers or Dehumidifiers

When humidity or allergens are high, the air is full of water or particles that can get into your lungs, eyes, and nose. These allergens can cause your family to experience runny noses, itchy eyes, wheezing, and other symptoms of allergies.

There is a solution, though. One of the easiest ways to control humidity and allergens is to use an air purifier or dehumidifier. Air purifiers and dehumidifiers can remove allergens from the air using a HEPA or other filter. These devices can remove allergens and other particles from the air and then move the cleaner air throughout the room.

2. Wash Toys and Plush Animals

While it may be tempting to let your child cuddle with their stuffed animal forever, there may be a reason to give your child’s toys a good cleaning. Dust mites are often found on stuffed toys and other soft surfaces and can irritate you and your family members.

It is also important to note that not all stuffed animals and toys are created equal; some are better than others.  If you do have a concern about dust mites possibly living in your children’s toys, you should add washing stuffed animals in the washing machine to your cleaning routine.

3. Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming is a great way to get rid of allergens in your home. However, many people do not vacuum enough, or they just don’t vacuum well. If you have not vacuumed in a month, it is a good idea to vacuum the entire house.

To get the best results, you should vacuum at least every two to three days. Vacuuming frequently and thoroughly is a great way to keep your home free from allergens.

4. Change Your Vacuum Bags and Filters Regularly

Vacuum bags are meant to hold dust, dirt, and other allergens inside the bag. If you leave a vacuum bag full of allergens in your vacuum, allergens can re-enter your home when you vacuum.

In addition to replacing your vacuum bag, it is important to clean or change your vacuum filters frequently. The filter should be given a good scrub at least once per month. The filter should be changed every three months.

5. Clean Dust Using Damp Cloths

Damp cloths are one of the best ways to clean the dust in small spaces. Dust is often found in high concentrations in the nooks and crannies of your home. You can clean dust from these hard-to-reach areas using damp cloths.

If the cloths are not damp enough to clean the dust off the surface, you can spray the cloths with a light mist of water before wiping them. Damp cloths are essential for cleaning dust from small spaces, which can be hard to reach with a regular vacuum.

6. Wash Pillows, Sheets, and Duvets Often

Allergens may get into your pillows, sheets, blankets, duvets, and mattresses. While you may not think of these surfaces as places where allergens may live, they can be a place where dust mites may hide. If you want to keep your family as healthy as possible, it is important to wash them often.
